Overview

MDX-i Data Centre is a MainOne Company registered in Nigeria as MainData Nigeria Limited (MDXi). In January 2015, MDXi launched its flagship data centre project “MDXi Lekki” with the sole purpose of developing a hub for key intercontinental connectivity while serving as the primary point for traffic aggregation in West Africa. MDXI’s Lekki data centre is currently the largest purpose built data centre in the entire West Africa.

MDXi operates truly carrier-neutral facilities since launch and has harnessed MainOne’s network footprint to not only interconnect all major network providers in the region but also enable smaller ISPs and virtual network operators connect to the data centre to provide services to hosted customers. In Nigeria, the Lekki data centre is directly connected to all Mobile Network Operators and 26 network providers with services across the country.

In addition to submarine cable connections, MDXi is also directly connected to over 500km of metropolitan multi-core optic fibre via diverse routes (and still building) within the Lagos metropolis.

The data centre campus hosts one of the largest Teleport Antenna farms in the whole of West Africa with gateways to 4 major international satellite networks – EMC, Avanti, Nigcomsat and Speedcast (Harris Caprock).

In November 2017, MDXi commenced construction of another purpose built data centre on a sprawling 5-hectare campus situated in Sagamu; 90km away from the Lekki data centre. This data centre will be completed by 2020 and is linked to Lekki via gigabit capacity inter-data centre connectivity infrastructure and provides much needed disaster recovery and expansion capabilities to data centre customers in Lagos and Accra.

In September 2019, MDXi announced the expansion of its Accra data centre footprint with the planned build of a new data centre facility in 2020. The Tier III facility will be constructed on 4,047 sqm land area in Appolonia City, a fast-growing light industrial park, located within the northern suburbs of Greater Accra metropolitan Area. The 100-rack facility is expected to be ready for service by Q4 2020 and will cater to the ever-increasing demand for colocation and interconnection services for multinationals and local businesses seeking shared service facilities for their ICT resources in a world class facility.

In October 2019, MDXi expanded into Cote d’Ivoire with the landing of the MainOne submarine cable in Grand Bassam, Cote D’Iviore. The newly constructed MainOne data centre in Abidjan is a purpose-built data centre located alongside the cable landing station to house infrastructure to facilitate the growth of the digital economy in Cote D’Ivoire.

The Abidjan facility, built to Tier III standards will address the needs of Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Telecom Operators and Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), Global Content providers and Enterprises in Cote D’Ivoire seeking world class infrastructure at competitive costs for locally resident data.

All MDXi data centres are directly connected to the MainOne’s submarine cable including the WACS, ACE, and Glo1 cables via direct fiber connections. With such diverse connectivity infrastructure, MDXi further enables connections to the Ghana, London and Amsterdam Internet exchanges with established routes to;

  • Around 20 Network and Internet Service Providers in Ghana

  • Over 500 Internet Service Providers Globally through the London Internet Exchange (LINX)

  • Over 800 Networks Globally through the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMSIX)
